Question: can a person consume too much soy protein in daily diet? what would adverse effects be?

Question Description:
I've been trying to follow the South Beach Diet plan, which strictly reduces the amount of sugar I'm allowing myself. Soy milk and tofu seem to be good choices for meal supplements, but I'm not familiar enough with their general effects on the human system. A package of tofu has "5" servings, but I am normally using half the package as part of my meal -- sometimes twice a day. I've only been doing this for several weeks, so can't say for sure if it's having any negative effects.

Answer#1: I did a nutritional natropathy course recently where we were told that eating alot of un-fermented soya can lead to hormone imbalances. Also Soya is a goitrogen, it stops the body absorbing iodine in food, so if your eating lots of soya you need to eat loads of sea weed like they do in Asia. Some young children who were bought up on soya milk have been found to have genital deformities, and hormone imbalances. Soya in small amounts or that has been fermented such as soya sauce or tempeh is fine. Hope this helps!

Answer#2: #1 I hear too much protein can lead to kidney damage. I can't find the data; if you want to look into it, do some searching. They definitely link diets like Atkins to this argument."According to the recently updated Dietary Reference Intake guidelines, the recommended daily consumption of protein for adult men and women is the following: Women aged 19-70 need to consume 46g of protein per day. Men aged 19-70 need to consume 56g of protein per day.#2 There's 20 different amino acids (proteins) we're supposed to get, and soy protein may, or may not have all of them. It might benefit you to get more of a variety from different types of protein.

Answer#3: If you're a guy, you should avoid soy protein wherever possible and replace it with another source, such as milk protein (skim) or whey protein. Soy protein contains estrovens, which will give you "man boobs" and screw with your testosterone levels. That's important not only for the sake of masculinity and sex drive, but testosterone is your #1 weapon in the war against flab.

Answer#4: Question to ureself would be if you are overdosing yourself on protein, are you depriving yourself of other essentials?

Answer#5: There is a limit for everything why over dose yourself.Consult a Doctor.
