Question: Whey Protein?

Question Description:
I'm thinking about adding Whey Protein to my workout, because I would like to gain a little muscle mass, do I take the Whey Protein before or after my workout? and do my workout have to be hard or light?

Answer#1: For muscle mass, it's particularly important to take in some protein as quickly as possible right after you finish your workout. Take in some protein and carbohydrates in about a 3/2 ratio (eg. 60 grams carbs, 40 grams protein).I would also take in some protein about 1 hour before your workout....20-30 grams. Be sure to take in some protein, through both food and protein shakes, throughout the day. As an example, if you weigh 200 lbs. you should try to take in approx. 35-40 grams of protein every 2-3 hours for a total of 5-6 small "meals" per day. You'll hear differing opinions about whether you should go heavy or light but these terms are relative. Different people respond differently to different rep ranges. Rep ranges can be anywhere from 3-15 per set. Anyone who says "you MUST do this" or "you MUST do that" doesn't know what they're talking about. You should try different rep ranges for a period of time to see what your body responds best to. You might experience great growth with most sets at 6 reps, but you might have better growth with sets of 12.

Answer#2: Take the protein after your workout. If you want to gain muscle mass you MUST go HEAVY. I come from the old school, Arnold, Franco Colombo, Lou Farigno, Lee Haney, Mike Materozzo, and even Dorian Yates. If you want to look like us freaks you must go heavy.

Answer#3: If you're wanting to gain muscle mass, take protein at regular intervals in the day, and before AND after your workout. General rule of thumb is 1 gram per pound of body weight (but that depends on your diet, too), and your body will process it easier in smaller intervals. Heavier weight with lower reps will help build mass if you do it right, but everyone is different and what worked for me may not work for you. It's all about body type, metabolism, diet, etc... Your best bet is to see a personal trainer once or twice. Good luck sculpting your fabulous new bod. lol
