Question: Treadmill vs Eliptical for calorie burning?


Question Description:
When I ran yesterday for 30 minutes at a good pace on the treadmill, it said I had burned about 280 calories. When I worked out on the eliptical machine today for 30 minutes at a similar pace, it said I had burned 850 calories! I know that machines can never give you an exact calorie reading, but this seems way too high! Is the eliptical machine lying to me, or can you really burn that many calories in 30 minutes on an eliptical? I'm a little skeptical.....

Answer#1: those calorie counters are not very accurate. they use statistical data based on the BMI.counting the calories expended during exercise is pretty much a waste of time IMO. change the focus to the distance that is traveled. if you constantly increase the amount of "work" that is performed each training session you will see better results in terms of fat loss. the goal is to perform more work each training session than the previous training session. if you can run 6 miles in 30 minutes today the next cardio day the goal should be 6.1 miles in the same 30 minutes, etc. this is how you increase cardiovascular endurance and as that improves the intensity of exercise is increased which causes an increase in the resting metabolic rate after training. the calories burned during exercise are not as important as the amount of calories that are burned after exercise as a result of increasing the metabolic rate is where real fat loss occurskeep a training log and track your progress.


Answer#2: Elliptical machines are typically a lot more inaccurate than treadmills but both can give you erroneous results. The calorie reading on the treadmill was probably more accurate, because you burn around 100 calories/mile when you run. The 850 on the elliptical is definitely off- sorry. You can burn more calories/mile on the elliptical if you are doing a higher incline because vertical motion is much harder- but not that many more. Also, always make sure to enter in your age and weight in order to get a more accurate calorie count. Keep up the good work!


Answer#3: The calorie burn on the elliptical does sound too high, but it will burn calories quicker as it keeps your upper body active at the same time as your lower body. Ellipticals are better on the joints also!


Answer#4: 850 in 30 minutes sounds very unrealistic.You really can expect to burn a lot of calories on an elliptical with less effort than a treadmill, but there must be something going on with that elliptical. I do 45 minutes at a relatively high resistance and I burn around 480 calories.


Answer#5: The eliptical machine does burn more calories than the treadmill. This is because you are working more muscles when on the eliptical machine then the treadmill.


Answer#6: well i run 30 minutes on the eliptical everyday and at the very most i've burn 450 calories in 30 minutes and that was going practically full sprint for almost the whole entire time, so i cant imagine how fast you were going to burn 850 calories in 30 minutes, i dont even know if thats humanly possible, theres like 1600 calories in 1 pound or something close to that so i can't imagine you loosing half a pound in just 30 minutes.. i'm not trying to call you out here but i'm just trying to figure that out first.. before i can answer your question.. however, the answer directly under mine is the best answer! =]


Answer#7: Hmmmm. seems off to me. I do know that you need to work out for atleast 30 minutes to start burning fat.


Answer#8: its a load of crap.. you are right to be skeptical. the calorie counters are just estimates based on age, weight, and rpms and resistance of the machine. they are not exact. 850 is unrealistic for 1/2 hour.
