Question: Treadmill and sore ankles?

Hi Guys. I bought myself a treadmill last week and have been using it faithfully for a couple of hours every day. I am not running, but am walking at a good clip--about 4 miles an hour or so. (with shoes) But I am experiencing some pain in the back of both of my ankles which is starting to slow me down. I realize that any time you start a new exercise program it can take awhile for your body to adjust and your muscles may be sore for awhile. My only concern is that I don't want this to get worse. Should I keep using the treadmill and wait for my ankles to get used to it or should I ease up? Has anybody noticed this when they first started using their treadmills?

Answer#1: I noticed something similar and after numerous Dr visits it was discovered I had tarpel tunnel, calcium deposits on heels, plantar facitis and a couple other un-fun foot and knee problems. I would suggest giving it a few days rest, or at least slow down the speed and distance. After you feel the pain is gone begin again, 1/2 of what you are doing now, and if the pain returns - listen to it - its telling you something. You might have to go to a non-impact machine like a skiing action, rowing machine or ab-scissors.


Answer#2: Is it your achilles' tendon? You could be overworking it if you take longer than normal strides or go uphill fast.Also, a few hours a day is a lot. It's most likely a stress injury, and you need to ease off, or it could get a lot worse.The type of treadmill and the condition of your shoes are also factors to consider. How soft is the treadmill? I mean, does it have impact stabilizers that make it easier on your body (less stress upon impact)? Also, how old are your shoes? You need to make sure that neither the tread nor the internal cushioning has been worn down.Definitely cut down on the treadmill time. Take a day off, even.
