Questions & Answers about Eliptical

Question #21: Treadmills, eliptical trainers or recumbent bikes?
Which one is best if used daily, for improving fitness, toning and losing weight?

Answer: I'd avoid the eliptical. It's bad for your hips. Imagine you are running in the sand, your footprints make a straight line. The elliptical is forcing your hips out of their normal pattern.

Question #22: Special stretches to do before workout on Eliptical machine?
Just wondering if there are any good stretches I can do before I work out on my eliptical? My calves are always sore after every workout...Thank you!

Answer: Here's what I do:- lunges (knee bent in front of you, leg stretched out behind you).-reaches (stretching by standing then reaching down to your feet)- stand up, lift yourself off the floor by the front part of your foot. For a challenge, try that when standing on the edge of a mat or phonebook. If you're too sore, you might lower the resistance/level of the elliptical machine. It might also be the position of your feet as you stand on it - clsoer to the front, closer to the back, right in the middle?

Question #26: Treadmill vs Eliptical for calorie burning?
When I ran yesterday for 30 minutes at a good pace on the treadmill, it said I had burned about 280 calories. When I worked out on the eliptical machine today for 30 minutes at a similar pace, it said I had burned 850 calories! I know that machines can never give you an exact calorie reading, but this seems way too high! Is the eliptical machine lying to me, or can you really burn that many calories in 30 minutes on an eliptical? I'm a little skeptical.....

Answer: its a load of crap.. you are right to be skeptical. the calorie counters are just estimates based on age, weight, and rpms and resistance of the machine. they are not exact. 850 is unrealistic for 1/2 hour.

Question #27: I just bought an eliptical trainer and I need to know what kind of workout will burn more calories.?
Someone told me that if I set the elipitcal trainer at a lower resistance and for a longer time period for like 45 mins. than I would burn more calories...and then someone else told me that larger muscles burn more calories..so I should set it at a higher resistance and I won't have to work out as long... Is this true for both statements??? I am confused..and I just want to know what kind of workout I should do on my eliptical trainer to burn the most calories..and cut weight..

Answer: Intervals are the best. Use a higher resistance off and on and a faster and slower speed off and on for best results.

Question #28: Best eliptical machine help!?
I need an eliptical machine that moves easy and is about 20 inches narrow to fit in the under the stairs storage if you can help it would be great.

Answer: Consumer Reports recommends the Schwinn 418 (about $1000) or Pro Form 700S (about $500)as a best buy for the money. I could not find any measurements though of the overall size. Why not contact the manufacturer and ask? I have posted the links here for the companies. You can contact them toll free or via email (provided on site).Schwinn:

Question #29: Eliptical Machine. Working out for 2 weeks, hardly see a difference. WHY?
I have been working out for a little over 2 weeks now. I work out everyday. I do 30 minutes on the eliptical machine, 30 minutes of weight training, 15 minutes of ab workouts, and then another 30 on the eliptical machine. So far I have only lost about 5 pounds. I do see a LITTLE difference in how my clothes fit but its way less than I thought. I am eating much better (hardly any breads or sugars) I eat fruit and vegetables and drink water. Why is it taking so long to see a bigger difference in my body? Should I change my workout?Thank you! Also, my goal is weight loss, not really to build too much muscle

Answer: 5 pounds, you are right on track. The body doesn't work that way - giving immediate results. It takes time, and it's slow and steady (when you do it right). You are doing it right, so keep at it. Also, other people will notice the changes before you will, since it will be so gradual.
