Questions & Answers about Treadmill

Question #11: Treadmill Question...?
I'm getting a treadmill and while I was looking it up online it says "No motor". I'm not smart at these kinds of things. So I was wondering what's the difference between a treadmill with a motor and one without? What's the difference between a Manual and Electril treadmill?

Answer: Manual = "No Motor" --- In other words, the only thing that will move the belt is the effort you exert with your walking motion.Electric = "With Motor" -- The treadmill can be set to go at a certain speed and maintain that speed with no effort from you --- i.e. you just have to 'keep up' with how fast you tell the belt to move.

Answer: No motor means you power it with your walking/running. The belt doesn't move unless you are moving.

Question #13: Treadmill workout question?
After a week of going on the treadmill for an hour 4+ times a week I've notice new leg muscles. My question is will I lose that "tire" around my hips and stomach? I know I won't get a six pack from the treadmill, but will I lose fat along those areas?

Answer: You should, as long as you've changed your diet as well. Try to stay off the junk and high fat foods.

Question #14: Treadmill Training?
Hi,I live in Houston and running in the heat/humidity is killing me. I've resolved to run treadmills at the gym during the summer and hit the road again in the fall. My question is this:Have any of you used a treadmill to actually train for and lower a 5k time? I'm currently at 20 minutes and hope to get down to my PR of 17 minutes. My gut tells me that it is probably not feasable, but I am hoping to hear from someone who's actually tried it. Anyone?

Answer: Unfortunately training on a treadmill to lower a 5k is going to be difficult. I've been running competitively since i was 10 and i have found that the best way to train for short distance races are repeated sprints. This is hard to do on a treadmill. Treadmill running doesn't really simulate a good stride either which can make running on normal surfaces awkward after awhile. My advice is if you are dead set on treadmill running try to mix it up with runs on an indoor track if at all possible. I lived in south Houston till I was 17 and if you don't mind waking up early, the heat and humidity is bearable at around 4 or 5 in the morning. Hope this helps.

Question #15: Treadmill Exercise Plan?
I'm currently trying to loose 5 pounds and really enjoy working out on the treadmill, my usuall work out time on the treadmill is about 60 mnts, anybody knows what should be the right break down for the work out ( warm up time, jogging time, running time, cool down time and also should i change the incline of the treadmill during my work out ).Thank you!!

Answer: Do you normally run the entire time or stay at a constant pace for extended periods?I found that intervals work best. Run at 6.5mph for about 4-5 minutes and then sprint at 7.5-8mph for 1-2 minutes. That will push your body and your heart.

Question #16: Treadmill and sore ankles?
Hi Guys. I bought myself a treadmill last week and have been using it faithfully for a couple of hours every day. I am not running, but am walking at a good clip--about 4 miles an hour or so. (with shoes) But I am experiencing some pain in the back of both of my ankles which is starting to slow me down. I realize that any time you start a new exercise program it can take awhile for your body to adjust and your muscles may be sore for awhile. My only concern is that I don't want this to get worse. Should I keep using the treadmill and wait for my ankles to get used to it or should I ease up? Has anybody noticed this when they first started using their treadmills?

Answer: Is it your achilles' tendon? You could be overworking it if you take longer than normal strides or go uphill fast. Also, a few hours a day is a lot. It's most likely a stress injury, and you need to ease off, or it could get a lot worse. The type of treadmill and the condition of your shoes are also factors to consider. How soft is the treadmill? I mean, does it have impact stabilizers that make it easier on your body (less stress upon impact)? Also, how old are your shoes? You need to make sure that neither the tread nor the internal cushioning has been worn down.Definitely cut down on the treadmill time. Take a day off, even.

Answer: Let your body tell you how much you should do. If it hurts at all stop & I think just getting on there for 10 minutes is great. I am 35 1/2 weeks & wouldn't be able to get on because I have been having such back pain, so good for you!!! Congratulations on your baby, you don't have too much longer :)

Question #18: Kitten on the treadmill?
I have a three month old persian kitten. I also have a treadmill. I'm not sure what my question is. Bottom line is I'm terribly worried of what might happen if my kitten were to go near the treadmill while someone was working out on it. When I'm on the treadmill I always make sure the kitten is in another room. But I'm afraid my husband might forget to put the kitty in another room if I'm not home someday. He can be a little absent minded sometimes. Does anyone else out there own a kitty and a treadmill? What do you do?

Answer: Are you afraid that kitty might run into the mechanics of the treadmill? Why not put a barrier around it so that kitty can't get in even if it is in the room?

Hi! im looking to buy a treadmill or eliptical, im looking more towards the treadmill. im over wieght and looking to loose about 50 pounds, is the manual treadmill a good choice, its cheaper so im leaning more towards the manual....also...... is it possible to loose 10pounds a month?

Question #20: Efficiency of treadmill Vs natural walking?
Just how energy-efficient is a treadmill in burning up calories? Given that the treadmill is moving, and that we are keeping pace with it, how much "distance" on a treadmill do you have to achieve to burn up the same amount of energy when you walk naturally along the footpath? Does anyone have real figures please?

Answer: i would asume natural walking/runing is more effective. idk it jsut seems so much harder and dredful than the shock absorbing tredmil i rather hop on
